🌱 Dragon Fruit Plant Lifespan
At Dragon Fruit South Africa, our field studies have shown that the optimal fruit-producing lifespan of a dragon fruit plant is approximately 25 years.
While a dragon fruit plant can live for 100 years or more, its peak production period — when it yields the best quantity and quality of fruit — is during the first 25 years. These are the most valuable years for any commercial grower.
🌳 What Happens After 25 Years?
Many farmers assume that once a plant reaches the 25-year mark, they must remove and purchase new planting material. While this is one option, it is not the only way forward.
Here’s the good news:
You don’t need to buy new plants.
Instead, you can simply take a healthy new branch (cutting) from the existing 25-year-old plant and plant it next to the original. In 1 to 2 years, this new cutting will grow into a strong, productive plant ready to take over from the aging one.
🌿 New Growth = New Generation
Each new leaf or branch that sprouts from an older dragon fruit plant is biologically considered a new generation. That means your existing field can provide ongoing planting material, allowing you to rejuvenate your farm without the cost of buying new stock.
✅ Sustainable, Cost-Effective Farming
This method of self-replacement ensures your field stays productive for decades, while helping you save money and maintain plant genetics that are already proven on your farm.
At Dragon Fruit South Africa, we believe in teaching smart, sustainable practices — and this is one of the most important.
